Income Generation
To create ‘a world without hunger, where people live in harmony‘, we need to achieve not only social empowerment but economic empowerment. We believe that economic poverty is not solely the result of individual inactivity or incompetence but is, in fact, caused by socio-economic challenges that contribute to a cycle of poverty for many individuals.
Our initiatives have focused much on breaking this vicious cycle of poverty. In order to achieve self-reliance of the the people suffering from poverty, we have supported various income-generation activities throughout the world. We will continue to increase the economic capacity of individuals and further stimulate the social economy in order to achieve economic self-reliance through solidarity and cooperation.
In 2021 Good Neighbors Kenya introduced a new approach of managing Income Generation funds to the community, in which data and evidence is centralized for the success and key to link the groups and GNI Core Value: “We promote self-reliance in sustainable development for individuals, families and communities”.
The introduction of the Umbrella SACCO in the Head Office and Project SACCOs in each CDP where GN Kenya offer sponsorship in schools has given sponsored children parents and the entire community members an opportunity to achieve self-reliance and economic empowerment through solidarity and cooperation.
The Umbrella SACCO also known as Wezesha Majirani SACCO whose members are Project SACCOs offers the following services:
- Widens financial access for Project SACCOs by offering Project Loan application with guarantors within the saving groups.
- Project SACCOs own accounts in Umbrella SACCO where they get loans to give their members.
- Creates loan management system through the provision of local internal policies for project societies and data management using a customized Micro-Finance Web system.
- Monitors loan repayment by encouraging all members to use Cashless payment through M-PESA for both loan disbursement and repayment. (According to the SACCO Society Regulatory Authority report 77.3b people used mobile money by 2023 and the number is increasing).
- Encouraging a Saving Culture for all SME business people which creates competition for top savers to apply for big loans.
